Astrachan is the solo project of Ben Astrachan, a self-taught analog tape musician who creates lo-fi folk rock in his basement studio on Chicago’s northwest side. He is also the co-founder of Berta Bigtoe and Astro Heart, and an active collaborator with other local artists. His sophomore LP Cleaner than Clean was self-produced and recorded to tape, released via Happen Twice.
Astrachan has opened for Meltt (2023), John Gallagher Jr. (2024), Headband Henny, Teenage Dads, Quivers, Yuma Abe, and Tommy Ragen (2025). With Berta Bigtoe, he has played sold-out and near-sold-out shows at venues like Lincoln Hall, Golden Dagger, The Hideout, and Schubas, and toured Texas in 2024 with festival appearances. In 2025, Astrachan performed 10 shows at SXSW, including Paste Magazine’s official showcase. A third self-produced album is forthcoming.
